Article 30: Every child has the right to learn and use the language of their family.

Here at South Street, we are proud of the diversity our school has. We have families from all over the world, speaking many different languages, and we strive to make them all feel welcome from the moment they step through the doors.

One of the ways we do this is through the support of our amazing ‘Young Interpreters’. These children have been working with adults from the local authority to develop their skills as interpreters, using their multilingual talents and supportive personal qualities. As part of their very important role at South Street, they help children and their families who are new to English and help them understand in our school to make them feel welcome, happy and settled, and to become a part of our school community.

It can be scary when joining a new school but our Young Interpreters (along with the help of the other children) make it their mission to ensure new children are not left out, feel confident to speak their languages, and to belong as part of the ever-growing South Street Community.
