Making Mobiles!

Article 31: We have the right to take part in a range of artistic activities.

In Year 1 we have been looking at examples of Alexander Calder’s artwork. Alexander is known for inventing wire sculptures that “move” and “flow” using air currents.

We looked at how we could make our own mobiles using a range of recycled materials.

First we cut spirals to help develop our fine motor skills. Then we sorted items into groups that would work on a mobile and items that wouldn’t – feather, milk lid, cardboard, pebble, balloon etc… We planned and designed our mobile in our art sketch books thinking carefully about how we would need to keep our mobile balanced. We used different sketching techniques (hatching and cross-hatching) to shade areas of our design and tried to draw straight lines without using a ruler.

We enjoyed making our models and displayed them around the classroom. We discussed what went well and what we could improve on next time.
