This week we read the book ‘How Many Jelly Beans? by Andrea Monetti. We had a jar of jelly beans to look at after reading and started to learn how to make sensible estimates. We thought about the number ten and made ten using our fingers. We then looked at the jar of beans and decided if we thought the number inside was a bigger number than ten or a smaller number. At the end of the week we checked to see how many there were using the ten frames to help us count a very large number!
We had lots of number fun with the jelly beans. We found ways to sort out the beans and recognised that the whole jar of beans could be seprated into groups. Each group was a different colour. We carefully counted how many were in each set and made a chart to show how many.
We also explored different ways to make four using the colours. We are learning to recall number facts that make up numbers within five. Later we tried out similar games at snack time with different berries.
