This week the children in Reception class have been learning about the spring festival Lunar New Year! They heard a story called the Great Race and learned how the years came to be associated with a different creature. They learned that 2024 is the year of the dragon.

They watched a the story of the Great Race that had a range of musical instruments some of which can be heard in traditional Chinese music. They also watched a traditional lion and dragon dance. The children went on to work together to create their own dragon, dance and music. We had a visit form Joy who brought in an exciting dragon costume and some information books and role play resources for us to use.

When finding out information form books and the internet, the children learned that some of the traditions were similar to those we learned about at Diwali and Christmas such as cleaning our houses, giving gifts and decorating our homes with lights and lanterns. The children all took home a lucky red envelope so that they could continue learning about Lunar New Year with their families.
