Mrs Taylor, Mrs Christophers and Mrs Stevenson currently teach in year 5.

We are looking forward to what the new school year brings.  We have lots of exciting trips and activities planned this year to enrich the curriculum and deepen the children’s understanding.

This term, as part of our English units, we are reading The Chronicles of Narnia – The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S.Lewis as well as The Snow Queen. To link with our English, we will be visiting Northern Stage to watch a production of The Snow Queen. In maths we will focus upon place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions in the first half of the term before moving onto measure, geometry and statistics.  We will begin mastering number in year 5 looking at developing multiplication and related division facts to strengthen our fluency.

In an afternoon, we will study a range of subjects.  In science we will be looking at life cycles. Our history unit will be the Anglo Saxons and include an overnight residential to Bamburgh.  In the second half of the term our geography focus will be the water cycle. In art, we will be looking at city landscapes and looking at the work of Francesco Lietti and Stephen Wiltshire. In Design Technology we will be looking at the structures of bridges. In the second half of the term, we will continue to develop our skills playing the ukulele. We will keep you updated with our exciting curriculum through our class page.

We really want to instil a love of reading. Every child has been given a reading record and a reading book. We encourage every child to read each night at home and write a comment about the book in their reading record.  We will visit the library each half term and children will get to access books from our school library too.

Homework will be given out every Friday to be returned to school on a Monday.  Each week there will be a comprehension related task and a maths related task.  Spellings will be handed out weekly, on a Monday, and children will be tested on a Friday.  All children are encouraged to access TTRS each week to support their fluency of both multiplication and division facts.

We have P.E. on a Wednesday where we are currently developing our skills in yoga and on a Friday, we have swimming.
