Welcome to the Year 5 Class Page

Mrs Taylor, Mrs Christophers Mrs Stevenson currently teach in year 5.

We are looking forward to what the new year brings.  We have lots of exciting trips and activities planned this year to enrich the curriculum and deepen the children’s understanding.

This term, as part of our English units, we are reading Yayoi Kusama Covered Everything with Dots and Wasn’t Sorry and From Here to Infinity and making notes to write a biography. We are also reading Robin Hood and are going to write our own version of the legend.   We also have the exciting opportunity to work with Gateshead Library and the author Lisette Auton to create a joint piece of work together. In maths we will focus upon place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions in the first half of the term before moving onto measure, geometry and statistics.  We have begun mastering number in year 5 looking at developing multiplication and related division facts to strengthen our fluency.

In an afternoon, we will study a range of subjects.  In science we will be looking at changing materials.  Our history unit, is the Vikings where we will have an online workshop from the Yorvik Centre. In art, we will be looking at the art work of Isaiah Zagar and his mosaic sculptures, moving on to looking at the structures of bridges.

We will also be showcasing our learning around compositions for the festivals of colour in music and in computing we are learning about computer programming language.

We will keep you updated with our exciting curriculum through our class page.

We really want to instill a love of reading. Every child has been given a reading record and a reading book. We encourage every child to read each night at home and write a comment about the book in their reading record.  We will visit the library each half term and children have access to books from our school library too.

Homework will be given out every Friday to be returned to school on a Monday.  Each week there will be a grammar related task and a maths related task.  Spellings will be handed out weekly, on a Monday, and children will be tested on a Friday.  All children are encouraged to access TTRS each week to support their fluency of both multiplication and division facts.

We have P.E. on a Tuesday where we are currently learning hockey and on a Thursday when we have swimming.

Remember: it’s really important to be at school every day, on time and ready to learn.
